Well, back to school means that you have to step on the accelerator and speed down the road on the course of your education. Next stop is the CA (Continual Assessment) which isn't too far away. Hope you guys do your best and do yourself, your parents and The Mentor proud.

Origin
There are no clear literary sources from which to trace the origin of the red envelope tradition. In China, during the Qing Dynasty, the elderly would thread coins with a red string. The money was called yāsuì qián (traditional Chinese: 壓歲錢 压岁钱), meaning "money warding off evil spirits", and was believed to protect the elderly from sickness and death. The yāsuì qián was replaced by red envelopes when printing presses became more common after the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911. Red envelopes are also referred to as yāsuì qián.

Anyway, hope you guys/girls have reaped a good harvest this Lunar New Year.

Jewish woman wants to take her dog to Israel, so she goes to the travel agent to find out how. He says, "It's easy. You go to the airline, they give you a kennel, you put your dog in it, when you get off at Tel Aviv go to the luggage rack, and there's your dog.

So she does, gets off at Tel Aviv, goes to the luggage rack, no dog. She goes to the lost and found, says, "Where's my dog?" They look all over the airport for it, and find the dog in another terminal. Only the dog is dead.

"Oh, my Gosh, they say, we killed this woman's dog. What are we going to do?"

Then one says, "Wait a minute, it's a cockerspaniel. They're common dogs.

There's a pet shop across the street from the airport. We'll get the same size, shape, color, sex. She'll never know the difference."

They bring the woman the other dog and she says, "That's not my dog." Laughingly and making light of it they say, "What do you mean that's not your dog?"

And she says, "My dog's dead. I was taking it to Israel to bury it."

Ox:
Still waters run deep, as anyone who has observed an Ox will tell you.
People born in the Year of the Ox are the supremely self-assured, and as a result are noted for inspiring confidence in others. Generally quiet and patient, they measure their words, and will speak clearly and concisely most often when it matters most.
Born to lead, Ox people can be quite stubborn — but also stubbornly loyal to those they love. However, when opposed, their fierce tempers are legendary. So always follow this very wise advice: never cross an Ox!
Generally placid and easy-going on the outside, the Ox can be very dogmatic. There are no gray areas evident within their narrow scope of vision, and they often only see things as black or white, good or bad. Therefore, they are never easily persuaded by a clever argument. Possessing an excellent memory, the Ox can often recall verbatim a conversation weeks or months after it has occurred.
Their physical stamina combined with their mental alertness is a distinct advantage when it comes to completing any task at hand. In fact, Oxen can often be seen patiently plodding away ... long after everyone else has dropped from sheer exhaustion!
Ox people are also generally good with their hands, and together with their other attributes are usually successful as doctors or surgeons, construction managers, army generals or business leaders.
Oxen are most compatible with: Rat, Snake, Rooster
Famous people born in the Year of the Ox: Johann Sebastian Bach, Napoleon Bonaparte, Charlie Chaplin, George Clooney, Walt Disney, Anton Dvorak, Clark Gable, George Frideric Handel, Oscar De La Hoya, Richard Nixon, Aishwarya Rai, Wayne Rooney, Vincent Van Gogh, Rosa Arks, Sylvia Porter.
Lastly, we, at The Mentor, wish all students, parents and all well-wishers a
Happy & prosperous Lunar New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai~

Cats are adorable creatures and with it's agility and feline characteristics, it is difficult for anyone one to despise them. Yet, there are people who are downright wicked, people who will not hesitate to kick them or give them a fright, just to get some cheap thrill.

A persian, Gucci, has been found within the premise of Upper Serangoon Shopping Ctr. The owner happens to be one of the tenants of the shopping centre and he has entrusted the care of the lovable cat to the cleaners. Unfortunately, 2 of the cleaners are believed to have ill-treated her, despite the protest of the care-giver.

Naturally, many students have taken a liking to the friendly Gucci and as affectionate as she is, she will not hesitate to be drawn near to the kids.

The watchful eyes of Gucci and Sherwin tries to distract her with a twig.

It has been a hectic week for students, both at school, as well as at TM. It is barely into the 2nd week of school and homework and pressure have been piling up. I understand the immense pressure you students are facing but I reckon this is what you call the pressure cooker of the education system of Singapore.

Nevertheless, I assure you that you are not alone. We, at TM, face similar situation as well. In fact, we have to worry about every student who has been entrusted to us. So, do understand that when we put on pressure on you to do well, we are doing it for your own good. In this society which puts strong emphasis on paper qualification, we would like to do our utmost to ensure that you, students, are on the right track in your quest. Keep up the good work for those who have been performing well. As for the weaker ones, we have not forgotten you, and never will we give up on you.... unless of course, you have given up on yourself.

As mentioned before and again, we do not just look into the welfare of your academic pursuit, but also into other aspects. We do bother about your well-being and that is why, we make it a point to remember each child's birthday. Just on Wednesday before the lesson rolled off, we celebrated Sing Ning's birthday. We decided to abandon the pizza and stuffed ourselves with a rich chocolate cake instead. Below shows the cheerful faces of the birthday girl and her friends... hope you enjoyed yourself and like the present we gave you.

Last but not least, do study hard and make good use of the weekends. Cheers to all!

The O Level results were released yesterday and guess what kids, the familiar face of that "jie jie" u have been seeing quite a bit of late( coz she is helping me and is part of TM) , has done well. Yes, Angel has done well and has qualify for a Junior College. In fact she has scored 4 distinctions! Way to go girl! Here's me wishing her al the best for her next stage of life and may she get into the JC she puts as he 1st choice. Yeah!

Chew Shi Rong did equally to qualify for a JC! I was very happy to have received his sms informing me of his results. Despite his quiet disposition, he sure has the potential to go far. So Shi Rong, the next target would be the university! Once again, congrats!

Not forgeting Donald Tan too, the boy who has been with us since primary one. After taking his O's, he was not too optimistic about his chances of doing well enough to qualify for a polytechnic. Well, Don- you made it. U have done better than most have expected and congratulations to you too. Keep up the good work and may it be a breeze for you to that that diploma in the poly of your dream!

Well, congratulations to all. All of you can do well in whatever you strive to do. Just make sure you stay focussed and nothing is impossible. So for the rest of you, work hard now and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised at the end of the road. =)

Charmel Lee was full of gusto when she took on Nicholas to a chicken rice eating contest. Nicholas had to eat 2 plates of chicken rice while Charmel just had to eat one. Despite the handicap, Nicholas was confident of defeating Charmel, who is of course known to be a small eater. However, just as David defeated Goliath, Charmel defeated Nicholas. When the petite girl finished her last grain of rice, Nicholas had only eaten one and a half plate. So, the winner is Charmel.

Below are some pictures of the winner in action.

Hmmm... delicious..

Oh, why is it so difficult to stuff the rice in my already so big mouth?

Luckily, I have Qoo to keep me company.

Chew... chew.... chew....

I must win that fat Nicholas!
Congratulations to the eventual winner.... Charmel!

THE TREE - Nicholas Phua

A seed sown, by a pair of unwavering hands.
The little life sprouted under the watchful eyes,
and with utmost tender, loving care.
It was showered with affection, it was blanketed by warmth.
Slowly but surely, it was nurtured, it was raised,
to a magnitude that was beyond compare.

Its lush foliage was playground for little creatures.
A haven for squirrels, a paradise for finches.
The animals made merry with their magnanimous friend.
Oh, what a hive of gleeful activities!
They said the tree was a delightful and would always want it around.
It did good for the little ones, it did plenty for them.
The torso was thick and the children played seek.
The fruit were plentiful, the fluid was sweet.
What a blessing it was for them to be acquainted with it!

The tree was high-spirited at being of service,
to mankind as well as the creatures of lesser of importance.
Amidst their laughter, it laughed.
In their sorrow, it cried.
It was contented to live, to serve and to be appreciated.

Winter after winter, generation after generation,
it stood firm, it stood strong, never faltering,
and never once forgetting its duty to serve.
It thought it would be strong; it thought it would not fall.
But alas,
they say it is a hindrance,
they say it cannot bear fruit.
They want it to go, to make way for concrete.
The chain-saw is hungrily buzzing,
the once mighty tree is trembling.

In anguish, it groans,
but who can hear it?
In sadness and pain, it moans,
but who can feel it?

I mourn.

The picture above shows Eileen conducting the secondary 3 lesson on Sunday. The Mathematics lesson is rather intense. Teng Han (in yellow), Cheiry (holding her chin), Putri( patially hidden by Sherwin) and Sherwin himself in red. Of course there can be jokes and laughter galore when Sherwin is up to his usual mischief. However, Eileen, with her commendable patience, is always able to bear with his nonsense.

The plot is centered on a 'fish girl', or mermaid, who runs away from her home in the sea. She ends up stranded on the shore and is rescued by Sōsuke, a five year old boy who lives on a cliff. After taking a great liking to her, Sōsuke names her Ponyo and vows to protect her forever. Meanwhile, her father Fujimoto is looking for his daughter, upset that she ran away. He calls his wave demons to return Ponyo to him. Sōsuke is heartbroken by this, and goes home with his mother, Lisa, who tries to cheer him up, but to no avail.
Ponyo and her father have a confrontation, where Ponyo refuses to let her father call her Brünnhilde and declares she is Ponyo, and voices her desire to become human, because she has started to fall in love with Sōsuke. Her father silences her with difficulty and goes to summon Ponyo's mother. Meanwhile, Ponyo, with the help of her sisters, breaks away from her father, and uses his magic to make herself human. This causes an imbalance in the world, which in turn results in a huge storm. Riding on the waves of the storm, Ponyo goes back to visit Sōsuke. Lisa, Sōsuke, and Ponyo stay the night at Sōsuke's house, hoping the storm will be over, whereupon Lisa leaves the house to check up on the residents of the nursing home she works at.
Granmammare, Ponyo's mother, arrives at Fujimoto's submarine. Fujimoto notices the moon has come out of its orbit and the satellites are falling like shooting stars. Granmammare declares that if Sōsuke and Ponyo pass a test, Ponyo can live as a human and the world order will be restored.
Sōsuke and Ponyo wake up to find that most of the land has been submerged. Lisa has not come home yet, so with the help of Ponyo's magic, they make Sōsuke's toy boat life-size and set out to find Lisa. While traveling they see ancient extinct fish swimming, such as the Gogonasus.
After landing and finding Lisa's empty car, Ponyo and Sōsuke go through a tunnel. There Ponyo loses her human form and resumes the form of a fish. Sōsuke and Ponyo are captured by Fujimoto and they safely arrive at the nursing home and meet Granmammare. Granmammare asks Sōsuke if he can love Ponyo even if she is a fish or mermaid. Sōsuke replies that he likes Ponyo in all forms. Granmammare then allows Ponyo to become human once Ponyo kisses Sōsuke on the surface
